Snowbirds love them and so do other folks. Spend the winter in Florida or Arizona and the summers in a townhome in the Minneapolis MN metro area. Lock up your townhouse and jump on a plane in the winter. Also, younger folks are too busy to want to do outside maintenance. Who wants to climb on the roof to fix your chimney? Let the HOA take care of those things. If you want to spend your off-work hours behind a lawnmower, snow shovel, or weed-wacker, you need to examine your priorities and get a life. Want to enjoy the outdoors? Just go to a Minnesota lake or park. There are plenty of them. You don’t need a yard to enjoy the outdoors. How many people actually spend time playing in their yard? Horseshoes? Volleyball? Those things just don’t happen in people’s back yards. Buy a cheap Twin Cities townhome and you will have time and money for other pursuits like golf, fishing and macrame.

You probably won’t feel closed up in your townhome either. There are plenty of end units or look-through style (windows on front and back) properties in that price range. Many of these town homes have been renovated and can be found in Maple Grove, Chanhassen, Apple Valley, Burnsville and Eagan. They almost always include a deck, a walkout, vaulted ceilings, and a large walk-in master closet. Do you have privacy concerns? Not to worry. These are soundproof. I have been selling townhomes in the Twin Cities since 1992 and I have never had anyone tell me that they need to sell their unit because the neighbors were being too loud.

That’s right. It is possible to find a move-in condition affordable townhome under 300K. If you want a habitable single family home in that price range, you will be looking for a long time, and it will only get harder. If you do find one, it will probably need some major repairs and renovation.
